Workshop on Orientation with Map and Compass in Gatineau Park

Finding your way with map and compass is an essential skill to master for anyone who participates in outdoor recreation activities. Come and learn the theory and practical applications of orienteering with map and compass.Compass_purple

This workshop is organized by the Friends of Gatineau Park and comprises of two sessions.

Theory Session
Through presentation and exercises, you will have the opportunity to learn the following:

• Understanding the legend on a topographic map
• Reading the landscape using a map
• Using coordinates to locate points on a map
• Measuring distance on a map
• Planning your route using a map
• Relationship between the map, compass and GPS

Practical Session
Outdoors, near the visitor centre, you will carry out a series of exercises covering these concepts and techniques:

• The components of a compass and how it works
• Determining a bearing
• Travelling on a bearing
• Detouring around obstacles

Dress according to the weather. Compasses will be provided but you may bring your own if you prefer.

Please note that you may register for either or for both of the sessions.

This activity is suitable for participants 13 and older. Reservations are required.
